Making a vision radius around the player

Making a vision radius around the player

Hi there, I'm kinda new to the Godot Engine and i wanted to make a vision radius around the player (somewhat like a light cone) in which the player can see the level (platformer). Problem is i dont know if or how to work with shadows in 2D or if i have to use layers for this. Would appreciate an answer. Thanks in advance

An easy way is to use the Light2D nodes, give it a texture of a black and white mask that you will want it to light or exclude light from. Adjust the settings to your liking, and for inverting it to create that fog of war effect, change it's Mode property to Mask.

Hello,

I tried to add a dark radius, and it mostly works.

Do i need to make the radius size so big (2 times the size of the screen, as my player moves in a fixed view, topdown world) There is no way to "simply" turn everything dark ?

Also the radius it covering my gui, how can i prevent this ?

I think if you go the masking route you have to make sure the masking texture you using is going to cover the desired screen dimensions. I think scaling is an option, but it might degrade the fringes of your graphic.

Alternatively, you can use a CanvasModulate node as a parent, and set it's color modulation to pure black. Then use your light2D as you normally would.
