I'd like to revive this discussion, since Godot's future is at stakes now.
The community becomes ever-more bigoted with each year of Godot's existence, and this bigotry creates a destructive us-vs-them mentality. This leaves a sour taste in developers' mouth. Developers will criticize Godot, whether you like it or not. It's also very sad to see how people get banned for having the "wrongthink" concerning how Godot's is managed as a project/organization, including this forum. This will lead to decreased adoption in the industry, mildly speaking.
I think with Godot 4.0, we will certainly see a temporary rise in popularity among a particular group of indie developers, then a gradual or even steep downfall in user interest going forward due to mismatch of expectation vs reality, especially for 3D. There already exist better engines which are designed for 3D specifically, such as Open 3D Engine, Flax Engine, etc.
Features that you'll see in Godot 4.0 are only designed to make a pretense of Unity/Unreal features, they will be overly simplified. Godot leadership creates these false expectations and hopes that Godot may even become an AAA engine, which is silly considering Godot's design and architecture. The only realistic motivation that I see why Godot leadership would ever decide to bring up the topic of AAA in the first place is to grow the investment bubble. Instead of focusing on parts which the engine might excel, Godot wants to create a product of "all things for all people", but at the same time, they manage to misspent the effort on things nobody wants in Godot.
Godot leadership also ignores the community feedback for the most part, and only pay attention to those people who show unquestionable loyalty to Godot leadership.
P.S. Or am I wrong? Let's find out! Time will tell.
