Auto-select theme based on System Setting

the forums have 2 themes: • Godot Lightly (Light Theme) • Godot Darkly (Dark Theme)

it is very good that besides the "Default" option, you can choose any of these 2 themes explicitly so that you can choose to use only one of these themes reguardless of the system theme or choose Dark Theme when your system doesn't have a "Light/Dark Theme" toggle.

but it is not good that "Default" is always "Godot Lightly" instead of the system theme. if i choose "Default", i expect this site to intelligently choose "Godot Lightly" when the system theme is set to "Light" and "Godot Darkly" when the system theme is set to "Dark".

this is especially frustrating as i already know it is possible. the Godot Homepage does this: play with your system's "Light/Dark Theme" toggle and see the homepage's colors change accordingly.

please add this automatic adjustment to this forum as going to a well-hidden setting that is separate from the expected place to change the theme is not very user-friendly.

Interesting! I wasn’t aware that they added dark mode support. Unfortunately, the forums uses a different syntax and backend for themes and content, so the solution they used may or may not work here on the forums.

Again though, I’ll look into it and see what I can find.

So I was looking into it, and it looks it should be easy to support in Javascript, but it's not nearly as easy to support in PHP, which is what Vanilla (the forum software) uses for plugins. The theme switching plugin is written in PHP, so there's not an easy way to just quickly implement automatic theme switching based on the preference of the browser into the current plugin right away.

It may be possible to add a javascript-based solution for dark mode quickly, using something like Darkmode.js, but this would require some large edits to get working.

I'll continue to keep my eyes peeled and look into seeing if there is a way to do automatic theme switching with the existing plugin and/or implement it, but it looks like it may be complicated to implement.
