Edit: don't get me wrong, C++ is a broken mess imo. But with that codebase there's no way around it for the time being.

Well, I read through some of the code. Just this alone makes it better than C++;

I find C++'s formatted stream IO is so painful that I reverted to fprintf before, just to write formatted text files.

Thankfully, I haven't been in enough of a hurry to do anything in years that python or lua couldn't handle it. I'm happy to ride on the real programmers' coattails.

I think I'll stick with GDScript or C#. I already spent way too long trying to learn to program back when. 🙂

I still watch the first two D&D movies every now and then, so I'll probably like this one.

I really liked the D&D cartoon as a kid.

Oh, that still exists ? I recall meeting with friends on Friday evenings and parting on Monday morning for school. Each with their own character sheets and a bag of dice and player's handbook. The dungeon master's off limit desk, dimly flickering lights, trying to read our fate from his facial expressions as he cowered behind sheets and tables.

And sometimes discussions about how to interpret the AD&D rules. Then he lifted his Dungeon Master's handbook, a heavy folio, put on his sternest face, and all arguing was ended.

That was in the 70s ...

I always wished I got to play Shadowrun. It was the cyberpunk version of D&D. I did play D&D a bit in junior high school, but I never got that far into it. Maybe only a few games.

For a while, lots of people were playing online with software like maptool. However, there are at least five different editions, not including all of the spin-offs like Pathfinder. It kind of makes me wonder how they all agree on a rule set to use. 🙂

Back in the day, I played D&D, AD&D, GURPS, Champions, Traveler, Gamma World, Fantasy Trip, Call of Cthulhu, etc. But I think Tunnels & Trolls was my favorite.

Traveller, right ! That came out a bit later, early 80's. But then I went to uni and stuff stayed at home.

Rule were transferred to PCs, I read, in games like Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, etc. But copyrights apparently prevent further spread. Pity.

Doing something like this would be along my alley, after having finished the terrain renderer I'm doing. Currently pondering the mapping of heightmap raster to world positions. And I'm dropping vulkan because it costs too much time. Maybe I get back to it once things are finalized in opengl 4.5.

I just realized if you right click on a scripted node you can "extend script" to allow us to make our own messes of inheritance. I spammed it 4 times and set the init and ready functions to print out stuff. They all execute. I wonder if they execute if I don't overload them? How would you know? Yuck or cool?

Oh, that's cool. I never noticed that button. I usually do it with class_name manually, it looks cleaner.

151 classes, one scene. Gdscript gives you the choice. And if there's a performance issue, I haven't noticed it.

Depends how it is realized internally. Inheritance or virtual methods carry a slight overhead via lookup table, but could also just be a concatenation of function calls. I just wouldn't build a whole project on it, may also be difficult to maintain if there are chains of scripts dangling under a node, and when they start to exchange data it may even get messy. I'd see an application where there is encapsulated functionality that needs a lot of code. But then the alternative of a new node may be the better choice.

Always go for the simplest, most obvious option when having the choice. In 3 years maybe I'd have problems remembering what I did back in the day.

Pixophir It really depends on whether you need an override or not. I use them once in a while but I can't think of where right now. It definitely comes in handy. Yeah, classes make all the difference in the world to me. I wasn't impressed with Godot till they implemented classes. They seem to work well.
