In a lot of videogames, first person shooters in particular, I always notice they're locations with a whole bunch of crates and shipping containers. Can you guys give a list of 4 type of locations that are most likely to have these types of objects in abundance?

Maybe at a ship dock. Warehouses. Back of shopping centers. Honestly, I think it's a cheap way to add objects to a game, but it works for a reason.

cybereality Recently, I was placing a first person shooter by an indie dev and was filled with a whole lot of those objects. However, most of the shooting took place in close quarters. Everything seemed natural but, I didn't have a name for the type of location the levels where in. Now though I want most of the shooting in my game to take place in close quarters, I don't know how to do it with those crates and shipping containers while making it feel natural.

The idea was when a game designer runs out of original ideas, they add crates or barrels. So you can judge a game by measuring how long it takes from the beginning of the game until you see a crate.

Kojack Yeah, I see your point. That explains why the crates keep coming out in the first person shooters I play. I guess I should to try to find some inspiration elsewhere. 😆

There are many cramped scenarios that do not involve a fat load of crates. Caves, offices, schools, train tunnels, factories, castles if you want to go a little Resident Evil 8. Though maybe you shouldn't set your first person shooter in a school. That is, unless, you want free marketing.

some_lame_kid I already got the whole office setting in the bag. I did consider the whole castle setting but, perhaps I should revisit it. If I'm going with a castle, I probably should just thrown a medieval village too to make the game a real tribute to Return To Castle Wolfenstein. Right now, most of the assets I made for my levels are just furniture and appliances that I can put in houses. I don't think most people would ever get tired of just streets and buildings but, I though that there was something more to this crate motiff that keeps popping up in shooters. Hmm..free marketing. 🤤

Remember, games don't have to be reality. You can put a crate on the Moon.

A game set as a worker revolt in an Amazon warehouse would have lots of crate like objects.

The robots could have gone crazy, so it's humans vs machines.
