I've been reading another "list your favorite" software discussion, so I thought I'd start one here. Feel free to post your favorites, and why you stick with them. I think we can all assume godot is among them, but what else do you use -- and not just to make games?
I think my most used programs are:
- Firefox: I'd use something simpler, but I need this to get to my bank account anyway.
-- greasemonkey: Tired of any annoying feature of any web page? Odds are that you can erase it with this.
-- uBlock origin: Easier than greasemonkey, but same idea.
-- noscript: Please use this. Seriously.
- xterm: People keep trying to make better terminal emulators, but they never succeed.
- makemkv: Living proof that copy-protection doesn't work.
- python: I built my own transcoding server that runs 24/7, a personal home page that shows all my useful data in one place, a diff for video files that compares every stream individually, a complete backup/checksum solution, and countless other vital scripts with this.
- feh: best image viewer, full stop
- mpv: Best video player -- if you can't do it from the command line, it's not worth doing. I built my own video server with remote control web page using mpv and lua -- kodi's got nothing on it.
- ffmpeg: The swiss-army-knife of audio and video. It does everything from compressing .wav files to live-streaming. Half the audio/video programs you see out there are nothing but front-ends for ffmpeg.
- audacity: I mostly use this to sync rifftrax with their movies (for my viewing only, natch).
- gimp: Don't waste your money on adobe.
- gvim: This is the reason I have so much trouble with godot's text editor -- once you learn stateful editing, you'll never want to go back.
- nzbget: The first rule of usenet is, don't talk about usenet.
- homebank: just a simple finance program for a simple guy
- claws mail: The best feature of claws is no html support. Html email can die in a rocket-fuel fire.
I won't elaborate on borgbackup, pass, wine, when, mupdf, lineageos, f-droid, minetest, scummvm, blender, imagemagick, inkscape, mkvtoolnix, yt-dlp, firejail, gentoo linux, openbox, or xournal, except to say that they're awesome and you should be using them. :)
