We installed a new plugin. If your opening post features an image it(the first image linked in post) should become the topics thumbnail. One issue it has though is it doesn't deal well with videos. So if no image it should show the authors profile picture instead. But if instead of an image the first media link in the post is to a video then it might try to use the video for thumbnail resulting in a circular loading icon instead.

I like the image thumbnail as lots of users don't have avatars. However, sometimes it's annoying it there is that loading circle.

I've posted a bug report on the plugin tracker but some of the topics might be fixed by clearing the forum cache( @TwistedTwigleg @cybereality ). There's some info I couldn't provide since I have no access to the server back-end, obviously.

Perhaps they are on a slow connection. It is lazy loading but those 'thumbnails' I think are just the full image scaled down for display.

Perhaps I admit that ideally it would be nice to have both the avatar of the topic author from the profile and a picture describing the topic, maybe even with the possibility to select it… But we don't live in an ideal world…

Unfortunately the plugin settings allow turning it on (so thumbnails are used) or off (profile pictures always used) without any customization.

We had something similar back on the old forums with Vanilla, but it didn’t support lazy loading and instead just slowed everything down to get the thumbnails…

Ideally I would like to see people's avatar as well, since it's easier to see who started the topic.

However, right now almost no one has avatars, except a few regulars, so it looks better with some images than those blank circles.

Though maybe it would be cool if people without avatars automatically got the Godot robot head, that way it doesn't look broken.

The FoF plugins are all open source, if push came to shove we could just customize it. I'd say that would have to wait tho. Author kept it intentionally minimalist to keep it as easy to maintain as possible from what I gathered from the topic here:
