These things unfortunately happen. I killed a rat on the road. It was running at daylight, maybe a case of insomnia :-), dashed out of the side of the road just in front of me when I was travelling at maybe 70km/h and I thought, "oh that's close" but it made it until the middle of the other lane. But then it turned back and there was a nasty sound. Nothing I could have done without endangering others.

Thank you :-) Yeah, I'm retired, and my offspring regularly ask me "When do you grow up ?". I found to the hobby programming a few years ago. Your grandpa is right, one can be a generalist or a specialist or anything in between. Both are needed. You can really accomplish something if you start with a thing you like early in life. You may switch later, when you think it is enough and opportunity arises. Humans have a pretty long productive lifetime when they are left in peace.
Why ? Well, hard to answer :-) But in a population it is not that uncommon to meet with individuals of different age. When you go out you see them all, but maybe choose which ones to make contact with using all your senses.
Here on the internet you don't see the people, many of the evolutionary developed human senses are missing, like eyesight and smell. If they don't tell their ... state of advancement ... you would not know. At least, with respect to the environmental deterioration, we have the gift of being born early.
