some_lame_kid I just saw Tetsuo: The Iron Man

I saw that back in the early 90's. That movie was crazy and kind of what I consider real cyberpunk. Not that neon light rain aesthetic. You can talk about anything in this thread, so always feel free to bring stuff back up. Still on the revenge movie kick, watched Homefront, which was amazing, and also Death Wish with Bruce Willis, one of his last films. Death Wish got bad reviews, cause people said it was a walking ad for the NRA (it kind of was) but the movie was great. Had a lot of fun with it.

People often misquote that, not understanding the original context.

It was from William Shakespeare and the full quote was:

a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.

When it was written, it was a compliment. But people these days often repeat things with no idea what they actually mean or where they came from.

Tho I have to admit my mind is strained trying to imagine if he'd say the same thing today. From what I know people in his day were much more jack of all tradesish than "modern masters".

That's probably not entirely fair. I use the word wings without knowing the Old Norse word vængir. The meaning of things changes with time. If one puts someone down for being a "jack of all trades", that just reflects our views, not shame for misrepresenting Shakespeare. Although I have regularly heard jack of all trades as a positive title.

But have you heard the full version? "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but better than a master of some."

It pertains to the fact that while a master of some is really good at solving specific issues within their domain, but they are completely and utterly useless at solving problems outside their domain since they have put blinds on and have hyper focused on a domain neglecting others.

Meanwhile a jack of all trades is a master of none, but has at least some awareness in all domains. So if you were to pick one whom would you pick to work together with? Obviously if you could you'd pick both of course, but if just one, which?

Erich_L That's probably not entirely fair.

It is fair when people using the phase today are using it with the opposite of it's original meaning. In that a "jack of all trades" is somehow at a disadvantage, when that is simply not the case.

I didn't consider this a negative statement.

Historical reference aside, and it was possible back in the day late medieval/early renaissance to learn most if not all about a single discipline, and to get an overview of available knowledge - becoming a "jack of all trades" is impossible today, so that saying doesn't have the same meaning any more. It isn't even possible to learn all about a single discipline. But generalists as in people who can connect disciplines are needed in many fields today.

This is, though, not a general allowance to faff around without a goal ;-) In contrary, actually.

Indie devs are probably the closest thing to jacks of all trades- programming, game designing, sometimes making their own artwork and music...

And to think there are professional programmers out there who only work on game prototypes, not the real game art.

We indies are spoiled. 😉

So, out of curiosity, when I made a grid map before, I literally resized it to, I think 0.1 as the meshes were so mammoth, but then the meshes didn't seem to get set up properly as a mesh library. I have the same issue here... And yes, the size, once again, is 0.1 for every single massive mesh. Is there a way to set the entire library to a certain size, or do I have to set everything to one, then resize it all in game- despite the crazy size the items are?

Whoever set the size of the meshes either didn't understand the size of a standard unit, or was was too rushed in their work. Here is a sample of an onion plant in game.

Nerdzmasterz I think the MeshLibrary from a scene does not keep the transform, rotation, or scale of the MeshInstance nodes in it, unfortunately. If you can, I might see if you can open the 3D file and scale all the objects there and then reexport, assuming all of the objects are in one (or a few) files.

TwistedTwigleg I found a solution, although it's a bit weird- it does work!

So, what I did was I tried to resize the models on the library- didn't work. However, the grid map can be scaled. Here's a much smaller patch of ground that I have shrunk.

Nerdzmasterz awesome! I didn’t think about doing it that way, but that is a good solution to work around the issue 👍

Using git and stuck on a project; I have a bunch of project editor files that need to be merged in git like filesystem_cache7, filesystem_update4, project_metadata.cfg, editor_cache.cfg, uid_cache_bin. Yikes. It doesn't seem like that kind of stuff should be in the git.ignore tho, right?

I wouldn't store any of that stuff in git. It's mostly temporary data. On my system, it's in a different directory than the project is, and I've never had problems importing a project without those files.

duane makes sense to me. I still prefer the directory method.

The main things I like about git, are that I can see everything I've changed (including all of the debugging statements that I forgot to take out), and when I really screw something up, it's easy to roll back to the version that worked, with or without saving the problems. I even use git when I'm writing.
